Abacus - Vintage Bobbin and Coconut Shell Necklace
Remember the fascination of creating rhythmic colorful patterns with the ancient Chinese bead and wire counting device?
I came across a cache of old bobbins that fit my 1950’s Singer sewing machine that I used when I belonged to the 4H “Prickly Pins” sewing club of Lexington, MA. In order to use them I would have had to remove all the thread because it was so old. Instead I lacquered the thread right onto the bobbin to create this abacus necklace. Using jet Czech glass bicones, vintage metalized resin accents, and dyed coconut shell disks I separated the clusters into intriguing colorful patterns of planned randomness.
